1-3 chapter summaries

1: Kit was complaining to her mother that she didn’t want to go to "Blackwood Private School for Girls" because her friend tracy was not going, when they pulled up to the school, Dan/her dad said that she would not be missing a thing while they were in europe (for their honeymoon). She did not want to stay there because she thought that something evil was there, and She was arriving one day early.

2: Kit and her family a rrived at the school and Madame duret showed her around and to the new teachers and her room. Kits real name is Katherine but she liked Kit better.

3: Kit was laying on her bed, she thought it wasn’t very comfortable, she started thinking about a book she read in school and it was about a canopy that tried to suffocate people, she was thinking about it because she has a velvet canopy on her bed. She has lost track of time and it was already 6:30 the time dinner was served. Lola that housekeeper came up to tell her it was Dinner, she at dinner and talked to the three other people that were there. They said it would be different when the other girls got here. She had a dream that night about when her real father died, she remembered him coming into her room, When she woke up the next day her family was at her house and her mother was crying, she could not figure out why and it was because her father died, then she woke up and turned on the light beside her bed and slept with it on the rest of the night.

4-6 chapter summaries

4: Kit woke up, looked out the window and started unpacking her suitcases. She had a suitcase full of picture and she pulled out of of her and tracy(her friend). Then she took out a picture of her family. She studied it and looked at the little girl, she never remembered her ever being that happy, she was holding on to her biological fathers arm. Her mother had enlarged it and told her that she does not want her to forget him. She walks down stairs and eats some toast, then she walks by the office and sees another student she was introduced to her, and showed her to her room. Then the other girls got there and they met.

5: Kit is writing a letter to her friend Tracy when she hears someone scream, she wasn't sure if it was true, she started to go to the door she didn’t want to but she had to. She opened that door and it was almost black except the dim light at the end of the hall. She started to walk down the hall, leaning herself against the wall. She made it to Sandy’s room and it was really cold, she could feel someone else in the room besides Sandy. She walk to the bedside table and turned on the lamp, Sandy was blue with cold and she saw no one else but her and Sandy, she talked to her about a dream she had about her parents who had died when she was young, then they went back to Kit’s room and did not fall asleep till the break of dawn.

6: Kit went into the dining room to get some breakfast, Lynda and Ruth were already in there and getting ready to go to class, Kit went to Music class (piano). She was not ready to play so she asked to talk with Jules so they talked about what has been happening and the dreams that the girls are having, Jules said everything will be find and said that he would have rather met her in a different place to where he was not her teacher, then she started to play the piano.

7-9 chapter summaries

7: Kit, Sandy and Ruth were in the parlor before dinner and Lynda came in and said that she had done Kit’s portrait, she showed it to kit then the other girls came to look at. Ruth could not believe that Lynda had drew it because she had never had a talent for drawing. Then Professor Farley came in and looked at the portrait he said it looked very professional. Kit took the picture up to her room then went to dinner. After dinner Sandy wanted to go outside to the garden so she went and got Kit. They went out to the garden and were talking about how Blackwood was like a shadow and how it was creepy at first but now it’s not, Sandy said that they had become a part of the shadow. They were looking at Blackwood and Kit looked to her room she saw that there was a light on in her room, she knew she turned it off and locked her door before leaving for dinner. Kit and Sandy raced up the stairs into Kit’s room but when they went in all the found an empty room with no light on. That night she had a dream that she was playing a beautiful piano piece, when she woke her fingers ached, and felt like she had not slept.

8: Kit was coming from her class with Professor Farley and stopped to get her mail that was on the table, she went up to her room and read the letter two from her parents and one from Tracy. She the post cards then, Tracy’s said it must be a great place because Kit had not got around to writing. Tracy told her who she got for teacher and about a guy in her class that she liked. She wanted to know how she was getting along without a guy under the age of eighty, kit thought, she remembered writing about Jules in the two letter she wrote for Tracy, she thought they could have got lost in the mail. She saw the door slightly cracked, she said come in thinking it was Sandy, but it was ruth, Lynda drew a picture of Ruth, but it was an unformed face, a triangle nose, and a halloween pumpkin mouth, and a mess of black hair. Ruth knew that something was going on, Ruth told Kit about how her and Lynda met at a boarding school in LA, But the school wasn’t necessarily for brilliant students, Lynda was sent off to school because her mom was living in Italy, Ruth could not keep up Socially and Lynda could not keep up academically so they found each other and everything was fine. Ruth said that they mixed up Lynda’s scores and thats how she got in to Blackwood. Ruth thinks that they are all very sensitive to ESP. Lynda can remember, Ruth can tell what answers are and thats how she got ahead so quickly, Sandy can know things before they happen, and so can Kit. Kit was on her was to Literature and she heard Jules playing music, it was the same piece that was in her dreams. She went in and asked Jules what it was, and the name, Jules did not know so Kit asked the composer, and he did not know that either.

9: By October Lynda had created two landscapes and decided that she would sign her work with the initials T.C. Sandy had wrote a poem even though she had never written on before unless it was for school. Ruth had got to do some very advanced math. Ruth was talking with Sandy, and Kit. Ruth thought that something supernatural was going on in Blackwood, because all the sudden they are finding talents out of the blue. They could not go into the village to ask because they have never left after school started and the gates were almost always closed. Kit decided to ask Natalie about Blackwood when she got the chance. Sandy had came into Kit’s room in the middle of the night, Sandy told Kit not to turn on the light because she could still she Ellis (the lady by her bed) when the lights are off. Sandy said she was young with beautiful eyes and had been through a lot of pain. Sandy said that she is no longer afraid of Ellis.

10-13 chapter summaries

10: Kit was at dinner and Lynda was not feeling well so after she was excuses she took Lynda some dinner, Lynda did not want the food, so Kit took it back to Natalie. Kit saw her chance to ask Natalie about Blackwood. Kit asked if she could ask her something, Natalie said that she can not talk to the students, but she asked what Kit wanted to know. Kit said about what this was before Madane Duret bought it. Natalie said that it was the Brewer place and kids would go up there and say they saw things moving, lights turning on, etc. Natalie said she went up there a couple of time and she didn’t see anything. Natalie said that Mr. Brewer was happy at first, had a beautiful wife, 3 or 4 children, en-tell the day that the carriage house caught fire, they said that the sleeping wing caught fire too. Mr. Brewer was away on a business trip. Mr. Brewer children and wife died from the fire. He live there by himself for years and years, but he acted and said that his wife and children still lived there with him. He would buy stuff for his wife, and cereal for the kids. He would attend Church on Sundays. He died and the village was wondering why he was missing Church so one of the them went up and found him dead on one side of the bed, but on the other side it looked like someone was laying there with him, but no one was there. Madame Duret came in said that Natalie should not be talking to the students, Kit said it wasn’t Natalie’s fault that it was hers. Madame Duret said that she should not defend Natalie and that she should go do homework.

11: Kit was writing a letter to Tracy, Kit said that she thought it would be a crazy letter, but she thought something was very wrong. Kit said she looked in the mirror and she looked very thin, she thought she was looking at a stranger. Kit says it’s not just physical, Lynda doesn’t come to classes and just stays in her room all day, and when she does come down she is very white and can’t seem to focus on anything. Madame Duret says she is just tired from painting. Sandy dreams that there is a woman by her bed, but Sandy thinks it more than a dream, Sandy talked to her like she is real. Kit dreams to that she is playing beautiful music unlike any other she has before. So much better, and it starts a soft and beautiful, but then it gets louder and causes physical pain. Kit has wrote her parents to live with Tracy. Sandy came into kits room and said she wrote another poem, Sandy started to read it to her, but Kit made it stop. Sandy thought Kit would like it, but she didn’t she still wanted to pull all the pranks they had planned when they first arrived, but neither of them wanted to anymore, they are childish and foolish. Ellis (the woman of Sandy dreams) thinks that Sandy should not publish anything because they can do better, Kit told her to stop talking about Ellis. Sandy said that she could be communicating with an actual person name Ellis somewhere across the world. Kit started to hear the music again but she told herself to stop and that she would not listen, but she ended up falling asleep and listening. Kit went down to dinner but in the mirror at the staircase, Kit saw herself and someone behind her, so she did the only thing she could so, and that was scream.

12: Jules was the first one upstairs to Kit, He asked what happen and she said that she a saw a man, Jules said that she was just imagining it, the Sandy, Madame Duret, Professor Farley, and Ruth were all upstairs wondering if Kit was ok. Kit said she saw a Man, and Madame Duret said that no one is here and if there was he would still be here cause he has nowhere to go, Sandy said maybe he went into Kit or my room. Ruth asked if they kept the doors locked, they both said yes. Professor Farley and Jules went into their rooms and look for someone, they said no one was in the rooms.They all went back to dinner and Lola served dinner, Madame Duret said Natalie had quit, and she was getting married. At 8:30 a phone call for Kit came, it was her mom, she said she hadn’t go any letter since they left, Kit said she wrote and sent them off, Kit’s mom said that she should send them a little farther ahead so they can get them, Kit asked her mom if she could live with Tracy in-tell they got back, her mom said no, said she loved her and so did Dan, and got off the phone. Kit started to walk towards the door and she saw a painting, one like Lynda’s but at a different angle, It was painted by Thomas Cole, who died in the middle of the 19th century.

13: Ruth and Kit were talking about Thomas Cole, Kit wanted to know if Lynda knew who he was. Ruth said she didn’t. T.C. Ruth said, Thomas Cole! That’s what Lynda signs her paintings with, so she must have seen his work Kit said, Ruth said never that she couldn’t have. They were outside and Lola came out with trash, At Least she’ll never quit Ruth said. Natalie didn’t quit Kit said, she was fired. But why? Ruth asked, For talking Kit said, about the history of Blackwood. Mr. Brewer and his family died here Kit said, Ruth said she might know what is going on but she would have to check, and she ran off. That night Kit heard the music again, this is just a dream she told herself, of course it’s a dream, a man said. He took her wrist and head her down to the music room and she hear so many voices, No I want her, no I haven’t used her yet, she heard voices say. She started to play the Piano, she stopped and woke up to find Jules recording her, Kit demanded an answer, and didn’t plan to wait till morning to get it.

14-16 chapter summaries

14: Kit has Jules wake everybody up so she can talk to them all. Madame Duret begins to explain about what's going on at Blackwood and what she did in her previous schools. Madame Duret said that in her other school she chose students like them, because dead artist could finish their work trough them, like they were messengers. Sandy and Kit become mad about what is going on and Jules and Madame Duret try to calm them. Kit decides she is calling Tracy to come pick her up and then realizes that the only phone is in Madame Duret's office.

15: The next few months passed by in a blur. Kit finds out that most of her letters were never even mailed. She also has a vision of the old Brewer family before they died.She drifts asleep that night only to wake up with sandy screaming with a pencil stuck into her arm.

16: Kit writes another letter to Tracy know that it will never reach her. She also confronts Jules in the music room and questions him. After confronting Jules she heads into the main room and finds Natalie to be waiting at the door. She hurries and gives her the letter but forgets to give her the address as Madame Duret rushes out the door.

17-19 chapter summaries

17: When Kit woke up that morning she felt as if she had never slept, she realized that her right hand was cramped, and the music book that was on her desk was half filled. Sandy told Kit that the same thing happened to her, she had wrote another poem, It was Sandy’s handwriting but it was in french. Ruth translated, said that they did not want to hear what it said, but she read it anyway, Kit and Sandy could not listen after at least half the poem, so they made ruth stop reading. After that the light went out and Sandy started to laugh and could not stop. Professor Farley came in and tried to help Sandy calm down. Madame Duret searching for candles, and Jules looking outside for the light problem. Kit goes to try and find Madame Duret, but she isn’t really going to find her. Kit is finding her way to the office, and the door opens for the first time. Kit tries to call someone but the phone is dead. Jules comes back inside and finds kit in the office, he says he will take her back to her room, and makes a path, then Kit and Jules see a pile of canvas, and they were shocked.

18: Lynda had painted a picture that deflicted torcher. She was always in her room painting. Kit and Jules found other pictures, but didn’t look at them. Kit wanted Jules to look at the files of the other girls from the two other schools, and what happen to them.Jules decided to look at them, he read a couple, and kit was eager to see what happen, then Jules finished reading all the other files, and said that he was getting all the girls out of there, if it is tonight or first thing in the morning.Kit and Jules went back to the Parlor, Jules said that Kit was in the office trying to make a call, Madame Duret said that she could never pull a thing like that, Kit said Jules was taking them out of here, Jules agreed. Jules said out of the 20 student reports are dead 3 from suicide, and one climbing out of a window that was classified as an accident, then rest went insane and are in a mental institution. Ruth,Sandy, and Kit started to burn everything that the dead people wrote through them. Blackwood caught on fire, and they left Lynda inside.

19: Kit goes back into Blackwood to get Lynda. Kit puts a wet dish towel over her head and goes up to lynda’s room, she pounds and screams in-tell Lynda awnsers, Kit told her to jump out off the window, so Lynda did, kit went back downstairs and out of Blackwood, ran to the driveway and the Roseblumes were there to get her, because Natalie found Tracy's number at the top of the letter.
